Reality stars face criminal charges related to tax fraud

Whether you love or loathe them, many Ohio residents are likely familiar with the Bravo Television Network series "Real Housewives". The reality series follows and chronicles the lives of well-off women from cities and states accross the United States. One the most successful and lucrative seasons for the series focus on a group of Italian women from New Jersey.

Most fans of the "Real Housewives of New Jersey" know Teresa Giudice as one of the most brash and combative cast members. Additionally, fans also likely know Teresa's husband Joe as being equally brash and combative. More recently, however, Teresa and her husband Joe were indicted on 39 criminal counts related to fraud and other tax crimes.

The couple is facing charges related to crimes including mortgage, bankruptcy and tax fraud. According to court documents, the couple received more than $4.5 million in mortgage and construction loans. When applying for these loans, however, prosecutors contend the couple lied on applications and submitted false W-2 documents.

In addition to the criminal charges related to mortgage and loan fraud, Joe Giudice could face additional charges related to tax fraud and tax evasion. It's reported that from 2004 to 2008, Joe failed to file or pay income taxes. The couple may also face additional charges related to bankruptcy fraud as they filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009 using false financial documents.

In addition to possible hefty fines, the couple faces up to 30 years in federal prison. Additionally Joe Giudice, who is not a U.S. citizen, could be deported to his native Italy.
