Milkshake singer gets unwanted attention from IRS

Kelis Rogers is perhaps best known for her hit song Milkshake. Born in Harlem, the R&B artist recently when through a very public and contentious divorce and child custody battle with her ex-husband, rap artist Nas. While it's been years since Kelis enjoyed major success as an R&B artist, she's currently making headlines for a very different reason.

According to court documents, Kelis is accused of failing to pay an estimated $800,000 in taxes. Tax documents provided by investigators at the Internal Revenue Department, show the singer owes back taxes for the tax years 2004 through 2010.

While the 34-year-old songstress and mother recently paid nearly $400,000 to settle her federal tax debt, she's still in hot water with the IRS. State IRS officials in both California and New York claim the singer still owes back taxes in those states. If the singer fails to repay these back taxes she could face additional tax penalties and fines or even potentially serve time behind bars.

While the tax troubles of the rich and famous are often aired in public, in private many everyday Americans also struggle with tax debt. For those individuals who owe back taxes or who failed to file tax returns, it may be wise to talk with an attorney who has experience handling criminal tax-related matters.

Ohio residents facing potential tax crimes often turn to legal professionals to help provide advice and guidance on how best to resolve a tax-related issue. In many cases, a criminal defense attorney is able to help individuals reduce the amount of fines and penalties owed as well as avoid lengthy prison sentences.
